Lewis scores on debut

Lewis nets for New York Red Bulls II on his debut

Zeiko Lewis scored on his debut for New York Red Bulls II in their opening game of the season in a 1-0 win at home to Richmond Kickers at the weekend.

The Bermuda winger, who has been farmed out to New York Red Bulls’ reserve team for the season, reacted quickly to a poor clearance from Kickers Hassan Ndam to fire home.

Lewis, who was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the MLS SuperDraft in January, said: “I’m happy I scored. I saw it up, made my best shot, and it went through the defenders legs.

“I couldn’t believe it dropped to me — as soon as it got to me I was just like: don’t miss. I’m just happy the team got the result.”

The 21-year-old admitted that the deep-lying Kickers proved tough opponents to break down.

“It was definitely a mental thing for us,” he said. “Playing against a team like that you’ve got to be very patient and take your chances when you get them and that’s what we did.

“We said we just needed a shot to go our way and it did. They got tired and we just kept in, and kept in, and finally got the breakthrough.”

Red Bulls II play in the Eastern Conference of the United Soccer League.
