Wells takes charge in Huddersfield rout

Wells scored his tenth goal of the season, had an assist and hit the woodwork

Nahki Wells notched his tenth goal of the season and had an assist in Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 Sky Bet Championship victory over Norwich City at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers striker scored his team’s third goal in the 73rd minute with a left-footed shot from an angle and came close to grabbing another six minutes later when a shot with his right crashed against the woodwork. The Bermudian also assisted in Town’s second goal, scored by Aaron Mooy, that made the points safe.

The triumph snapped Huddersfield’s two-game losing streak that put a dent in their hopes of securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.

“I’m delighted to get that three points after two consecutive defeats,” Wells said. “I think we produced a thorough, great performance.

“I knew once we got the goal it would put us on a good leg to go and get the three points. That’s just the way it’s been for us this season and I think the confidence a goal can give you against a good side like this means a lot.

“Against sides like this, you have to put them away when you have the chance and I think that 20-25 minute period in the second half is what won us the match.

“I think we lacked a bit of quality in the final third and that’s probably the only negative for the first half.

“The difference in the second half we created the same amount of chances and we were a little more clinical.”

Wells was delighted to put an end to scoring drought.

“It’s not a great feeling for a striker to go a few games without a goal,” he said. “It’s been a bit of a stop and start over the last few weeks.

“I had a good chat with the manager [David Wagner] before the game and had a little bit of a motivational chat.

“He said it’s time to really propel and put in 110 per cent. I tried my best and it’s great to get back on the scoresheet.”

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Town finally made the breakthrough in the 65th minute when Wells’s strike partner, Elias Kachunga, latched onto a long ball that the Norwich defence failed to clear and scored his 12th goal of the season.

Mooy made it 2-0 five minutes later with a low shot that beat City goalkeeper Michael McGovern at his near post before Wells, who had two shots saved in he first half, capped a brilliant display by scoring the home side’s third shortly afterwards.

The victory moves the West Yorkshire club back into third in the Championship table.
