BFA efforts hit back of the net, says Lowe

The Bermuda Football Association’s efforts to raise the standard of the senior national programme through increased activity are beginning to bear fruit, according to BFA technical development director Maurice Lowe.

Bermuda are scheduled to travel to Grenada in June to play two international friendlies during the Fifa international window between June 5 and 13.

The upcoming matches arrive on the heels of the national team and a local select’s friendly fixtures against Canada and the New York Cosmos at the National Stadium, which also fall in line with the BFA’s mandate for the future of the national programme.

“Credit to BFA president Mark Wade and the executive council for recognising that in order for our guys to get results consistently we need matches consistently,” Lowe said.

“And what you’re seeing now is us getting consistent matches, and the technical department is very thankful for all of the work that goes on behind the scenes to make that a reality.”

Bermuda beat Grenada — who, at No 176, are ranked nine places above the island in the world rankings — in their previous meeting in March 2015.

“It’s a good challenge for us and we’re thankful for Grenada who came down when we were doing our World Cup qualifying preparations,” Lowe added. “This is, in a sense, reciprocal for them coming down to help us along and the match helps everyone in the region.

“We know a bit about Grenada and obviously they want to do well just like we do and so we will definitely be putting our best foot forward.”

Lowe said the island’s preparations will shift another gear after Sunday’s FA Cup final featuring PHC Zebras and North Village who have won the competition 19 times between them.

“You will see increased activity after the weekend’s matches with the coaching staff getting together to plan and go through the gears to see which players we have our eyes on for this particular series of matches and what we are trying to accomplish,” the former Dandy Town defender said.

“In terms of the squad, we will have an ongoing training pool and then closer to the final selection process we will whittle it down as necessary to a final travelling squad of 20 players.

“We played against Canada and the New York Cosmos so we are not starting anything. This is ongoing preparations with the players that were involved for those series of matches and then including others [overseas professionals and college players] based on availability as we build up towards the actual match date.”
