Warwick Archers capped their inaugural season with a courageous come-from-behind victory over PHC in a thrilling Appleby Under-14 KO Cup final at the National Stadium last night.

Archers, who fall under the auspices of Premier Division champions Robin Hood, won 5-3 on penalties after the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation.

PHC went ahead through a thumping 25-yard strike from Nazye Matthie only for substitute Marcus Brangman to grab an equaliser and send the match straight to penalties.

Archers won the shooutout with a round to spare, Jazir Warner converting the deciding kick after Zakiyah Lee, the PHC captain, struck the woodwork.

“That’s [penalties] something we actually worked on yesterday just in case it went into penalty kicks and so said so done,” Dennis Brown, the Archers head coach, said. “I am very proud of these young men who showed character to come back into the game and maintain their composure.”

Devonshire Cougars edged BAA 1-0 in the Appleby Under-16 KO Cup final.

Jinairo Johnson’s 52nd-minute strike proved to be the difference for a dominant Cougars side that also hit the woodwork.

“I am very proud of these young men who deserved this title because they worked very hard from the beginning of the season to the end,” Kevin Simpson, the Cougars coach, said.

Despite defending for long spells BAA had plenty of good looks at goal but ultimately paid the price for poor finishing.
