Ralph Bean Jr has called time on his glorious football career.

The North Village forward confirmed his retirement less than 24 hours after his team’s 1-0 extra time FA Cup final defeat by PHC Zebras at the National Stadium.

“That was my last game and I’ve had a good innings,” Bean said. “I am very satisfied with my football career.”

Daren Usher’s extra-time winner proved to be the difference in Sunday’s thrilling cup final that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Bean went close himself, forcing PHC goalkeeper Quinaceo Hunt to make a brilliant save to turn his effort around the post as Village took the match to their opponents from the opening kick off.

“I was looking to win as always,” Bean added. “But I was honoured just to be able to play because some people don’t get the chance to play their last game in a cup final.”

The 36-year-old player won countless league and cup honours with Village and also had a stint as the club’s Premier Division coach.

“It’s been an honour and a joy to play for Village,” Bean said. “The club has a great legacy and has done a lot for their players over the years, including myself.”

Bean believes that Village have a bright future, despite going another season without a trophy.

“I think that we are going in right direction,” he said. “Village have a strong foundation and even in a trophy-less period a lot of teams would be overjoyed with the league positions and cup finals we have been in.”

Village finished third in the Premier Division and also reached the semi-finals of the Dudley Eve Trophy and Friendship Trophy.

This is the second time that Bean has retired from top flight football having spent two seasons playing with Village in the Corona League.

Corona League rules prohibit players from playing in their league and the Bermuda Football Association leagues simultaneously.

However, Bean was able to return to the Premier Division ranks after Village dropped out of the Corona League.

“I didn’t plan on playing in the Premier Division this season,” Bean said. “It just happened because Village didn’t field a team in the Corona League again.

“I was available and just came back out to help the club. I only played a portion of the season, to be honest with you, and most of the time I came in was because of numbers.”

Bean is the son of Village and Bermuda football legend Ralph Bean Sr.

Asked was it a burden following in his famous father’s footsteps, Bean said: “I never took that pressure on and he never pressured me as his son, so it was always good. My father and I have a really good relationship with each other.

“Also, my mother had a conversation with me early in my youth about that. She prepared me for that and said that I should not take it on.”
