Wells held in 200th start

Milestone man: Wells has made 200 starts in England

Nahki Wells achieved another milestone in the English game yesterday.

The Huddersfield Town striker marked his 200th start in his team’s 3-2 come from behind home victory over Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship.

Wells had a quiet afternoon at John Smith’s Stadium with no attempts at goal or assists before being replaced in the 86th minute by Collin Quaner, who notched the game winner in stoppage time.

Bermuda striker Wells had netted four goals in the previous three meetings between the two clubs going into yesterday’s clash but was unable to keep that impressive streak alive.

The hosts were forced to chase the game after falling behind to Aiden McGeady’s 23rd minute wonder strike from outside of the box to the top right corner.

Wells’s strike partner Elias Kachunga added parity to the scoreline when the German striker nodded in his 13th goal of the season in all competitions from Australian Aaron Mooy’s cross from a set piece from close range just before the break.

Town took the lead for the first time through Jack Payne’s 70th-minute header. But the visitors were back on even terms nine minutes later when Jordan Hugill rose in the centre of the box to head in Tom Barkhuizen’s cross.

Hugill then went from hero to villain as he brought down Kachunga in the box in the fourth-minute of stoppage time.

Mooy’s penalty kick was saved but Wells’ replacement Quaner slotted in the rebound — his first goal for the club — to give Town’s faint hopes of automatic promotion a boost while mathematically their place in the promotion play-off.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield manager, said: “I am very happy and proud with what the players did today; they played fantastic football and it was great to watch.

“It was entertaining football with a great end and the players totally deserved this result.

“The players said in the dressing room this was a helluva win — and it was.”

Huddersfield are away to Derby County in their next outing in the Championship on Monday.
