Brighton & Hove Albion need just four more points from their last four fixtures to clinch a first promotion to the Premier League, but Nahki Wells and his Huddersfield Town team-mates still believe they have a chance of clinching the second automatic promotion spot ahead of Newcastle United.

Huddersfield are away to Derby County in today’s televised match (SportsMax, 1pm Bermuda time), hoping for a win that will keep their slim automatic promotion hopes alive on a day when Brighton could secure promotion.

After their win over Preston North End, combined with two dropped points for Newcastle in their 1-1 draw with Leeds, Huddersfield are eight points behind Newcastle and with a game in hand. Newcastle are away to Ipswich Town today.

“There are still a lot of fixtures in a short space of time,” Wells said ahead of the Preston match. “It’s important we put in a strong run going into the playoffs if that is going to be our fate.”

Wells was substituted late in the Preston game as his replacement Collin Quaner notched an injury time winner.

Victory today against an unpredictable Derby team would virtually assure Huddersfield of a place in the playoffs when third place meets sixth and fourth and fifth play in the other semi-final. The first leg of the playoffs are scheduled for May 13, 14 and the second leg on May 16, 17 to determine the two finalists for the final at Wembley Stadium on May 29, dubbed the “richest game in football” because of the rewards that come with promotion to the Premier League.

In a “60 Minutes interview with Nahki Wells” on the Huddersfield Examiner website, the Bermuda striker revealed he supported Manchester United as a youngster and that fellow Bermudian Shaun Goater was his childhood hero.

Dandy Town Hornets got a mention as his first club, while Wells named himself as the “best dressed player” in the Huddersfield team. Joe Lolley, he says, is the team’s worst dresser.
