Wells starts as Town clinch playoff place

Whatever will be, will be: Wells and Huddersfield are dreaming of Wembley Stadium

Nahki Wells and Huddersfield Town clinched a place in the Sky Bet Championship playoff places with a 1-0 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday.

Huddersfield, whose chance of an automatic promotion berth was scuppered by Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Preston North End at St James’ Park on Monday, secured the win when on-loan Chelsea winger Izzy Brown scored a 31st-minute winner.

Bermuda striker Wells started the match before being replaced by Philip Billing in stoppage time.

Wells was one of four changes to the team who had lost 4-1 at home to Fulham on Saturday, replacing Collin Quaner in a lone forward role. Brown and Sean Scannell replaced Billing and Joe Lolley in the starting XI while Martin Cranie came in for Tommy Smith, who picked up a dead leg in the Fulham defeat.

Meanwhile, the Terriers’ leading scorer, Elias Kachunga, was missing for the second straight game with a calf injury.

Wells had the game’s first chance, but blazed over the crossbar after Brown found him in space in the penalty area. Brown himself would make no mistake when he bent a shot into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards for what turned out to be the game’s only goal.

Huddersfield were under the cosh, somewhat, in the second half, with Andreas Weimann drawing a good save from Danny Ward and Dave Edwards hitting the post with the resultant rebound.

However, Huddersfield soon picked up the tempo again and substitute Quaner fired wide after getting on the end of Aaron Mooy’s free kick.

The result moves Huddersfield back up to third in the table — and dreaming of Wembley.
