Rai Simons has been offered a new contract by Chesterfield as they look to rebuild after relegation to Sky Bet League Two.

Simons, 21, is among four players — Ian Evatt, Laurence Maguire, Dan Gardner — to be handed new deals by the club who have confirmed that 12 players will be leaving.

Gary Caldwell, who was appointed as Chesterfield manager in January, said that the team needed a facelift as they prepare for life in the lower tier.

“It is never easy having to tell players that they will not be offered new contracts,” said Caldwell, a former Scotland defender.

“But it is something that has to be done as we look to rebuild over the summer and shape a squad capable of competing in League Two.

“We have made contract offers to four players and hope that they will all sign.

“I would like to thank the players who are leaving the club for their service and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Caldwell heaped praise on Simons recently, believing that the Bermuda striker has plenty more to offer.

“I think he can get better, physically, he can still improve and once he plays games regularly he will improve,” said Caldwell, whose side finished bottom.

Simons, who signed for Chesterfield in April 2015 from non-League Ilkeston, made 24 appearances this season without scoring. He scored five goals in 22 appearances last term.

The players leaving Proact Stadium are Ángel Martínez, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Dan Jones, Liam Graham, Curtis Morrison, Jake Beesley, Thorsten Stuckmann, Lloyd Allinson, Sadiq El Fitouri, Jay O’Shea and Charlie Raglan.

Utility man Ritchie Humphreys, 39, is in talks regarding a coaching role.
