Clyde Best believes Nahki Wells’s exploits are inspiring the next generation of Bermudian footballers.

Wells hopes to follow in Best’s footsteps and reach the top flight by winning the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium today.

Best will join the thousands of Bermudians watching the clash, albeit from the comfort of his Somerset home rather than the numerous bars televising Huddersfield Town’s showdown against Reading.

“There’s too much noise in a pub,” Best said. “I’ll definitely be watching at home, though.

“It should be a good game as Reading are no slouches. I’ve been impressed with the job Jaap Stam [the manager] has done at the club.”

One of the few regrets of Best’s career was missing out on playing at Wembley.

He came close when West Ham United reached the 1975 FA Cup final against Fulham but had to settle for a place in the stands as manager John Lyall named Bobby Gould as his one substitute.

Still, Best’s position as the island’s pre-eminent footballer is secure, a trailblazer for black players in England during the 1960s and 1970s, he is proud that Wells is flying the island’s flag in the English game.

“I wish Nahki all the best,” Best said. “It’s great that we’ve got someone like Nahki who is continuing our legacy and carrying the torch.

“We’ve got a lot of children at English clubs doing well and the more we can produce the better it is for Bermudian football.

“For a little country like Bermuda to produce such players shows we’ve got something special here.

“We’ve got a lot of natural ability but that isn’t always enough, you need the other ingredients as well.”

Best describes Wells as a natural finisher and backs him to score goals in the Premier League if Huddersfield get promoted.

“Once you’re a goalscorer, goalscoring shouldn’t be that difficult, you just need people to help create chances for you,” Best said.

“You’ll always get your chances when you’re a goalscorer. Nahki’s a proven goalscorer and he shouldn’t have any difficulty finding the back of the net.”
