Wells set for date at the Palace

Away day: Wells's Hudderfield take on Palace at Selhurst Park on the opening day of the Premier League season

Nahki Wells could make his first appearance as a Premier League player against Crystal Palace when Huddersfield Town visit Selhurst Park for their opening match of the season on August 12.

Playing in the Premier League has been Wells’s ultimate goal since he left the island for England in 2010 and it is about to become a reality for the 26-year-old.

“It’s a dream, to have that opportunity now I am still getting my head around it and I will have the best possible summer in preparation for the Premier League,” Wells said recently.

Wells, who scored during the 4-3 shoot-out win over Reading in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at Wembley, was playing in League Two for Bradford City just four years ago but will now mix it with the big boys.

He is set to join Clyde Best, Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne who have all played in England’s top division, with Best a First Division player with West Ham United during Huddersfield’s last season in the top flight 45 years ago.

“I have proved myself at this level, I have scored over 50 goals in the last few years and I believe I have what it takes to have a bite of the cherry in the Premier League,” Wells said.

“I deserve the chance, I have scored goals at every level I have been at. I have worked hard to get to this point so it is important that I work hard to make the most of this chance.”

The schedule has been kind to Huddersfield for the opening weeks of the new campaign, with the newly promoted side to follow their trip to South London with home games against Newcastle, the Championship winners, and Southampton.

David Wagner’s side play Manchester United and Liverpool in consecutive weeks at the end of October, while Leicester City are the opposition for Huddersfield’s first match of 2018.

Wagner will be hoping his side have secured their Premier League safety with time to spare as they face Chelsea, Everton, Manchester City and Arsenal in their final four games of the season — ending their campaign with a home game against Arsenal on May 13.

Huddersfield and Brighton & Hove Albion, another promoted side, have been installed by the bookies as the two favourites for relegation back into the Championship. Brighton have an equally tough run-in, playing Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool in three of their last four matches of the campaign.

Chelsea begin the defence of their Premier League title at home to Burnley while Brighton host Manchester City and Newcastle take on Tottenham at home. Liverpool face Watford, under the new management of Marco Silva, at Vicarage Road.

Everton, who begin at home to Stoke City, face a testing opening to the campaign with games against Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United before the end of September.

The first weekend’s fixtures are completed by Swansea City’s visit to Southampton and Bournemouth’s trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Manchester United’s first meeting with Liverpool, always one of the highlights of the season, will be at Anfield on October 14.

The first Manchester derby will be at Old Trafford on December 9, the same weekend as the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Tottenham’s games face further problems because of conflicting demands at Wembley Stadium and the club immediately announced that their home game with Burnley on August 26 would have to be rescheduled because it clashes with the Rugby League Challenge Cup final.

The EFL fixtures for the other three divisions will be released on June. 21
