Leverock strengthens Hood defence

Big capture: Leverock has signed for Hood

Danté Leverock has bolstered Robin Hood’s defence after joining the Premier Division champions — although he hopes to return to professional football sooner rather than later.

It has been several years since Leverock featured domestically after spending a number of seasons playing at both the professional and semi-professional levels in the United States and England.

The Bermuda defender was among a handful of islanders who suffered relegation with English non-League side Ilkeston last term under the stewardship of manager Shaun Goater.

Ilkeston are presently holding talks with Alan Hardy, the owner of EFL League Two side Notts County, with a view to reviving the cash-strapped club who were wound up in the High Court last month.

“It’s a weird situation as I haven’t played domestically since I was 16 [for Dandy Town],” Leverock said. “I’ll obviously have to adapt to the local game but I’m looking forward to it.”

Leverock, who trained with National League North side Kidderminster Harriers during the pre-season, said he enjoyed his time at Ilkeston where he played alongside Bermudians Jaylon Bather, Dale Eve and Tevahn Tyrell.

“It was great working under Shaun Goater as he has a wealth of knowledge that he shared with the Ilkeston players,” Leverock said.

“I learnt a few things playing under him for that short time. I was at Kidderminster for a bit. They have a very good set-up, very professional, and with high standards.

“Unfortunately it didn’t work out and I chose to return to Bermuda because of some other personal reasons.”

Bather has returned to former side Hood and is likely to form a solid central-defensive pairing with fellow Bermuda player Leverock.

“Jaylon and I have a lot of experience together for club and internationally,” Leverock said.

“We have that chemistry, which is important.

“I intend to bring what I’ve learnt while playing professionally and set high standards for myself and my team-mates.”

Leverock, 24, is looking forward to working under John Barry Nusum, who has succeeded Kyle Lightbourne as head coach, as Hood prepare to begin their title defence.

“Playing for Hood for the time I’m on the island was an easy decision,” Leverock said. “I’ll also look to learn from my team-mates and the new manager John Barry, who I’ve previously worked with at the international level.

“Hood have a strong team with plenty of competition in every position, so I don’t expect to walk into the team.

“I’ll work hard just like everyone else.”

Prior to moving to England, Leverock spent two seasons playing for Harrisburg City Islanders in the United Soccer League’s Eastern Conference and is open to returning to the US.

“I fully intend to return to the professional game soon, whether that’s in Europe or the United States,” he added.

“Those options are in the works as it looks very positive and could happen close to the new year.

“It’s just about being patient and working hard while I’m back in Bermuda.”
