Trott won the European Under-19 Championship with England

Nathan Trott, the West Ham United and England Under-19 goalkeeper, has thrown his weight firmly behind Bermuda’s Concacaf Caribbean Women’s Under-20 qualifying bid.

Trott, a member of England’s squad that won the European Under-19 Championship a week ago in Georgia, attended Bermuda’s resounding 5-1 demolition of Curacao at the National Stadium on Wednesday and was thoroughly impressed with the home side’s dominant display in front of a raucous crowd.

“I think it was an exciting game to watch,” Trott said. “The girls looked really strong and confident, and I want to wish them good luck — especially to my old school-mate and current Bermuda captain Eva Frazzoni.

“She played outstanding and looks like a great leader on the pitch and I know from her personality she’s a great leader off the pitch too.”

Trott returned to the UK yesterday and is schduled to resume preseason training with West Ham next week, when he will join either the first team for their trip to Germany and Iceland, or their under-23 side in Slovakia.

“For the season I’m just looking to keep the form I ended with last season and see where things go from there,” said Trott, who signed an initial 2½-year deal with West Ham in January 2016 which has since been extended until 2020. “I’ll have a meeting with my coaches for more detailed information when I return to training in a couple of days.”

Before returning home for a brief vacation Trott savoured success with England, who edged Portugal 2-1 in the final to win the European Under-19 Championship.

Keith Downing’s side made history as second-half goals from Easah Suliman, an Aston Villa defender, and Manchester City striker Lukas Nmecha either side of Dujon Sterling’s own goal secured a hard-fought victory.

Trott, the ninth West Ham player to win the championship, was an unused substitute throughout the tournament but has played his part on the training pitch, his inclusion in Downing’s squad arriving just months after switching his international allegiance from Bermuda to England.

The promising goalkeeper says making history with “the best” team in Europe at Under-19 level was a truly memorable experience he will for ever cherish.

“My experience was great because I was in the best squad in Europe and to be involved and to make history is unreal,” Trott said. “Hopefully for the next international break I’ll be able to get minutes in and my first cap.”

Trott, the former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 player, wasn’t the only West Ham player involved in the European Under-19 Championship as club team-mate Domingos Quina featured in all of Portugal’s five matches.

“He [Quina] had a really good tournament and is a key player in our team,” Trott said. “We spoke multiple times around the hotel.”
