Wells suffers injury blow

Possible surgery: Wells's ankle problem stems from an injury he picked up while playing for Bermuda in 2008

Nahki Wells may require surgery on a persistent ankle injury and will definitely miss the start of Huddersfield Town’s debut Premier League season.

Wells, who continues to attract interest from other clubs, has a history of ankle issues and the club’s medical team believe the problem may have its roots in an old injury.

The striker picked up a serious injury while playing for Bermuda in a home friendly against Puerto Rico in 2008 and has a screw in his ankle which may now need removing.

Wells, who has not travelled to Austria for Huddersfield’s weeklong training camp, could be “missing for the next two or three weeks — maybe longer”, according to David Wagner, the team’s head coach.

“There are further investigations and, at the minute, there is a doubt if he needs surgery. He has a screw in his ankle from an injury ten years ago,” Wagner told the Yorkshire Post.

“Maybe we have to get that screw out. We will know more about this at the end of the week.

“The good thing is Nahki knows us so well that even if he misses some weeks it is not a problem for him.

“He is a player we have not been able to get so many training sessions into for pre-season, not as many as we like. But Nahki knows us well.”

Wells, who is in the last 12 months of his contract, has been strongly linked with a £10 million move to Sky Bet Championship side Reading — who Huddersfield beat in the play-off final at Wembley in May to gain promotion — with Wagner admitting that the 27-year-old “was a name on the market”.

Wagner said there had been no firm offers for the Bermudian who scored ten goals during Huddersfield’s promotion-winning campaign.

“No, nothing that I can really speak about,” the head coach said. “Of course, there are some phone calls and e-mails behind the scenes, but nothing to speak about officially.

“Nothing that will interest you. The window is still very early and we have five weeks left. We are in a very strong position because we have done much of our business so early.”

Wells’s former club Bradford City are closely monitoring the situation. The League One club have a substantial sell-on clause in the deal that took Wells to the John Smith’s Stadium for a fee that is now believed to have topped £1.75 million in add-ons.

Huddersfield face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their opening game of the season on August 12.
