Sean Dyche is backing Nahki Wells to be a success in the Premier League with Burnley.

The Lancashire side’s manager expressed delight over the deadline-day capture of Wells from Huddersfield Town for £5 million (about $6.6 million) and is confident that the Bermuda striker will be able to cope with the demands of the English top flight.

Wells is part of a revamped Burnley forward line, featuring fellow summer signings Chris Wood, the New Zealand striker who joined for a reported £15 million from Leeds United, and Jonathan Walters, the Ireland forward who arrived at Turf Moor from Stoke City.

“Nahki is a player I have known for a while,” Dyche told reporters yesterday. “I like the idea of hungry players who want to perform at the top level.

“Like Wood, he has been searching for his chance and it wasn’t clear it was going to come at Huddersfield. He is another player we have been monitoring for a long time and sometimes the lines just cross at the right time.

“He’s obviously something different to what we’ve got. We know in the Premier League you need as many different attacking threats as possible and he is a different type to what we’ve got.”

Wells, 27, is still waiting to make his Premier League debut, having been sidelined for the early weeks of the new season as he recovers from minor ankle surgery. He opted to move to Burnley after David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, made it known he would be prepared to listen to offers for Wells after the club signed two new strikers.

Wells, who is expected to resume training soon, sees it as a good move at this stage of his career.

“It’s great to still be in the Premier League,” he said in a deadline-day interview with Sky Sports. “Burnley are a club where I feel I can come and do well at this level.

“I’ll be given a good opportunity, [the manager] knows my strengths and sees me as somebody who can come in and help this group. I’m confident of course, but it’s not going to be easy.

“I’ve played throughout the Football League and in time I’m sure success will come. I just want to get my head down and get fit and get amongst the lads and kick on from there.”

Wells says he is healing well from the surgery and looking forward to his new work surroundings.

“I’m coming along well and I’m probably two or three weeks away from being where I want to be,” he said. “I should be on the grass in the next seven to ten days.

“The exposure that I’ve had with Huddersfield has been great. They’ve had an excellent start, all credit to the manager and to the chairman, the improvement has been great.

“They’re a good bunch of lads there and I wish them nothing but success. I’ve made some friends for life.”

Burnley play host to Huddersfield on September 23, but Wells doubts he will be fit enough to play against his former team.

“It might come a bit too soon, but you never know,” he said. “I’ll be real eager to be back on the pitch as soon as possible, to get my fitness and my body to where it needs to be for this level.”

From Devonshire Rec and Bernard Park only seven years ago, Wells is set to visit places such as Anfield, Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium this season for games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

“That’s what any footballer dreams about, it’s the biggest league in the world,” he said. “Burnley is a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to it. We all want to play on the big stage against the big teams week in, week out, and that’s what we’ll be doing.”
