‘Wells not yet ready for first-team action’

Good progress: Burnley striker Nahki Wells

Nahki Wells will need to get more minutes under his belt before he will be considered for selection for Burnley, according to manager Sean Dyche.

After playing an hour for the under-23 side against Nottingham Forest a week ago the striker came through his first full match on Tuesday in a behind-closed-doors game at home to Sheffield United.

But the £5 million deadline- day signing from Huddersfield is still in “pre-season mode” and is not yet available for first-team selection.

“Nahki Wells got his first full 90 minutes but he’s still in pre-season mode,” Dyche told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“If you imagine a normal pre-season players would have three or four 90 minutes.

“We’ll get as many minutes into him as we can before he becomes part of what you’d consider the squad.”

Dyche said Jon Walters, a summer signing from Stoke City, remained an absentee with a knee injury, while Dean Marney also came through a second 45 minutes against Sheffield United.

“Jon Walters is ongoing,” he said. “Dean Marney got another 45 minutes but we’re not rushing him back, he could have played on for longer but it’s appropriate at this moment.”

Burnley, unbeaten in their past six league appearances, are away to league leaders Manchester City tomorrow.
