Town hammer Cougars

In the goals: Hornets striker Angelo Simmons found the net

Dandy Town 3 Devonshire Couagrs

Dandy Town lived up to their name by stinging Devonshire Cougars at St John’s Field yesterday.

Hornets came close on two occasions with near misses from Angelo Simmons and Ernest Trott in the fifteenth and eighteenth minutes.

In the 40th minute Simmons floated a corner into the box that the Cougars defence did poorly to clear. The loose ball fell to Trott who thundered his shot into the roof of the net. Three minutes later Simmons powered into the penalty area, eluding two defenders and rifled a hard, low shot just inside the far post.

The Cougars attack, were rendered impotent by a stingy Hornets defence that allowed the Cougars very little time and space to manoeuvre.

Cougars, who had not conceded prior to yesterday’s match, fell further behind in the 65th minute after Kwame Steede, the Hornets player-coach, rocketed a shot that ricocheted off the far post and into the net.

However, undaunted by the Hornets strike, Cougars played with more urgency and tempo to their game as they sought desperately to re-establish any offensive rhythm that had been lacking.

Cougars were inspired momentarily when Ijahmon Mallory managed to power his header just over the bar in the 58th minute.

After a corner kick, Mallory again found himself alone at the back post, but could only react in frustration as he pushed a weak effort into the side-netting with only Hall to beat from two yards out.
