Steede: Goals are on the way

Kwame Steede, the Dandy Town Hornets coach, is looking for more consistency from his team before they take on Flanagan’s Onions in the Premier Division tomorrow night.

Town sit in mid-table with only four wins from eight matches and are seven points behind leaders PHC Zebras.

Strikers Ian Coke and Angelo Simmons are yet to produce their best form, with the team scoring just 12 goals in the league this season, but the partnership between last season’s leading goalscorers is starting to work. Last weekend, they netted two goals apiece in the first half in the 4-0 rout of Young Men’s Social Club and they will look to carry on that form against Onions at Goose Gosling Field.

“It’s only a matter of time, they are two big players playing on the same team who have to find their way,” Steede said after last weekend’s win at Police Field. “I would rather they find [their] rhythm later so that we can peak at the same time as a team.”

Town, who are the defending champions in the Expansion League Festive Tournament which starts next week, could be boosted by the return from players abroad. Midfielder Seion Darrell is likely to be out for the whole season with a leg injury.

“If you look at my team, we have a lot of youngsters,” Steede stressed.

“We had three youngsters in my backline today so probably some senior players will come back from school and the team will get stronger. Seion is out for the year; he got a bad ligament injury in preseason.”

Steede, a former captain for Devonshire Cougars, Bermuda and the Bermuda Hogges, was listed as a substitute last weekend, but says he would rather give those opportunities to youngsters.

Cleon Tear is ruled out after receiving a red card for a foul late in the match against Social Club after coming on as a substitute.

“I’m not scared to put them in,” he said. “If they are confident enough they will play. Right now they have the confidence and are playing. I’m still registered to play so I can’t rule that out, but I would rather see the youngsters push on.

“They are ready so it doesn’t make sense for me to stand in their way.”

Social Club could not have picked a tougher rebound match, travelling to PHC Field to meet the league leaders. PHC will go into the Christmas break in sole possession of first place unless Social Club can produce what would be the biggest upset of the season.

The Zebras are the only unbeaten team in the top division, picking up 20 points from eight matches to lead Robin Hood, the defending champions, by three points.

Victory over Social Club, bottom and winless in their first season back in the top flight after 37 years, would see PHC leading by at least three points in the title race.

PHC have not won the league since 2007-08, but their form suggests a tenth league title is on the way, joining Somerset Trojans on ten wins. The Zebras have not suffered a loss this campaign, in 12 league and Dudley Eve Trophy matches, scoring 32 goals.

Robin Hood are pressing hard to stay in the race and will be looking for a win when they travel to St David’s to meet Boulevard.

North Village are a further point back in third place and still in the race going into their tough away match with neighbours Devonshire Cougars, who occupy fourth spot.

X-Roads will aim to close out the first half of the season with a victory at Garrison Field as Somerset make the long journey from the West End. The Trojans, two points behind X-Roads in eighth place, are desperate for points themselves as they try to move away from the relegation zone.

The top spot in the First Division could change hands when leaders BAA travel west to play Southampton Rangers, the last remaining unbeaten team in the second tier. Just a point separates the top three teams, with BAA level on 19 points with Paget Lions, but ahead on goal difference, and Rangers in third.

Drewonde Bascome is set to make his debut for BAA after joining them as a late transfer, while Rangers picked up Darius Cox, captain of Hood last season, during the late period. BAA have also boosted their defence by signing former PHC goalkeeper Daniel Johnson.

Victory probably will not give Rangers top spot, however, as Paget have what looks like an easier match at Malabar Field against Ireland Rangers, although their opponents have managed a win and a draw in their past two outings.

Fourth-placed Somerset Eagles are at Wellington Oval to play mid-table St George’s Colts. St David’s hope to end a recent slump against Devonshire Colts, while Wolves play Hamilton Parish in the other match on Sunday.
