Cougars standing in the way of PHC title

The Premier Division title, the second relegation spot and one of the promotion spots could be decided this weekend as the season enters its penultimate round of league matches.

Leaders PHC Zebras are one win away from a tenth title to go with their Charity Cup, Dudley Eve Trophy and Friendship Trophy success this season.

Robin Hood made certain the Zebras will not claim a clean sweep of silverware when they beat them in the FA Cup semi-final at Somerset Cricket Club this week.

That loss will make PHC all the more determined to replace Hood as champions, after losing out to them on goal difference last season.

“One of the challenges for me this season has been to keep the players highly motivated to come out every match and compete,” coach Scott Morton said after Tuesday’s loss on penalties.

Morton is hoping complacency does not set in with his team so close to a first title in ten years.

“This was only our third loss and sometimes it’s difficult for players to remain focused and challenge in every single match when they are used to winning,” Morton said.

“Not saying they intentionally do it, but it may be on their minds that they won last week and the week before and are not conceding goals.”

Opponents Devonshire Cougars, who had title aspirations just a couple of weeks ago, could have a say in the title race. If PHC beat Cougars they will remain three points ahead of Hood and with only a game to play. Their final game is against bottom team Young Men’s Social Club.

Somerset Trojans could determine the fate of Flanagan’s Onions tonight when they play North Village at home at 8pm. The Trojans, who thrashed Cougars 6-3 last weekend, need just a point to make certain of Onions’ relegation, while also boosting their own hopes of qualifying for next season’s Dudley Eve Trophy. Onions are six points behind Somerset with just two games left.

PHC are three points ahead of Hood and also with a superior goal difference. Hood play Social Club tomorrow night at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm before closing out their season at home to Boulevard.

The other issue to be decided is the final Dudley Eve Trophy spot for next season. Five teams have already secured places, leaving X-Roads, Boulevard and Somerset to battle for the final spot. Just two points separate the three teams, with X-Roads playing Dandy Town on Sunday and Boulevard at home to Onions.

In the First Division, BAA and Paget Lions look favourites to clinch the two promotion spots. BAA, five points ahead of Southampton Rangers, can clinch their spot in the top flight next season when they travel to White Hill Field to meet Somerset Eagles. Victory for BAA against Eagles would mean that Rangers will be able to finish ahead of Andrew Bascome’s side.

However, a draw for BAA would set the stage for a thrilling final match between the two teams on the final weekend of the season.

Paget, who lost to Rangers in the FA Cup semi-final this week, will be looking for revenge by clinching the second promotion spot, leaving Rangers, still unbeaten, to spend another season in the second tier.

The Lions face St David’s at Lord’s while Rangers should remain two points behind them with victory over Hamilton Parish at home.

St George’s play Devonshire Colts at Wellington Oval on Saturday afternoon.
