Somerset retained the RO Smith Trophy when they beat St George’s 4-2 in the annual Over-40s Veteran All-Star match on Saturday at Wellington Oval.

The match, in its 24th year, had a fast start with Somerset scoring two early goals, as Rodney Bascome opened the scoring in the opening minutes when he capitalised on an error by St George’s goalkeeper Gregory Smith.

Mike Corday doubled the lead minutes later, blasting his shot into the roof of the net, before the home side hit back with a pair of well-taken goals from Del Tyrell midway through the first half to make it 2-2 at half-time.

Tyrell missed a couple of earlier chances, having a shot blocked by goalkeeper Gladstone Robinson and then shooting wide from another left-footed effort, before he struck with two right-footed shots from near the edge of the box as St George’s fought back.

However, Somerset had the last laugh with two more goals late in the second half to secure the win as Dwight Basden converted a header to put them up 3-2, before Curtis Grant closed out the scoring for the visiting team minutes later.

The match featured a female player for the first time with Chevonne Furbert, granddaughter of RO Smith, playing for St George’s.

Stuart Crockwell refereed the match while the two clubs honoured several former players.

Eugene “Docs” Outerbridge, Alvin “Feets” Wade and Quinton “Kite” Ible of Somerset and Glenn “Cleary” Pitcher, Clevie Foggo, Gary “Sid” Caisey, Kenny Pearman and Mike Whalley of St George’s were honoured.

Former referee Anthony Mouchette was also honoured.
