Reggie Lambe has a new challenge at Cambridge United

Reggie Lambe has been backed to be a success at Cambridge United, if the Bermuda captain can show consistency.

Lambe joined Cambridge in the summer after spending the past two seasons at fellow Sky Bet League Two club Carlisle United and Jon Colman, of the Carlisle News and Star, told the Cambridge News that the winger has obvious potential, but did not show it all the time.

What was his time at Carlisle like? “Lambe was part of a real recruitment drive in 2016-17 and a key part of the team that got towards the top of the league at the start of the season,” Colman said.

“[Carlisle] went on an unbeaten run until November and he chipped in with a few goals.

“He scored the first goal of the season at Portsmouth and then the winner on his home debut too. He started that season pretty well and last season too on the goal front. When the team was at its best he was a key part of it.

“He attracted criticism when they were struggling.

“A few fans felt he sometimes went missing, maybe didn’t show enough fight. But that’s not his game, that’s not what he’s best at.

“But over the two seasons his goal return was good for an attacking midfielder, he’s clearly got some real qualities. He is quite a clever player.

“Consistency — that’s what frustrated fans a bit because they could see what he could do.”

Lambe will reacquaint himself with Jabo Ibehre, the Cambridge forward who played with the Bermudian at Brunton Park.

“Jabo is obviously still popular here and he started his first season started like a train in 2015-16, but they were both part of a team that did really well and got some good results the next year,” Colman said. “Jabo led the line and players like Lambe and [Nicky] Adams were creative midfielders playing behind him.

“They didn’t exactly have a partnership, but they knew each other’s games pretty well and have both been around for a while now.”
