Saltus Grammar School Under-13 boys’ team lost to St George’s School in the final of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools Championships in Ontario.

St George’s, who lost 1-0 to Saltus in the group stage, scored two second-half goals to claim the title today.

Richard Todd, the Saltus coach, said: “Saltus can be proud of their accomplishment in their first year competing in the tournament.”

Saltus advanced to the final after defeating Upper Canada College 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out yesterday.

The game ended 2-2 after Saltus fought back from two goals down.

In the opening group game of the tournament on Friday, Saltus beat Collingwood School 1-0 in a hard-fought contest.

Joao De Sa played Keiron Bean through on goal with a defence-splitting pass for Saltus to take a 1-0 lead.

The second match of the day saw Saltus cruise to a 3-0 win against Sterling Hall School.

Essien Binns, Keiron Bean and De Sa each increased their goal tallies for the tournament with single strikes in the first half.

Saltus had numerous chances to increase the scoring in the second period but failed to covert their opportunities.

In the final group game, Saltus and St George’s School, both who had already qualified for the semis, battled for the top seed from the group.

Saltus scored from the penalty spot in the first half after De Sa was taken down in the box after a surging run on the right side.

De Sa converted the spot kick for the only goal in a tightly contested match.
