Clemons in dreamland

Willie Clemons scored nine goals in 31 games for Bodens

Willie Clemons says his maiden season at Bodens has been an absolute dream and believes their title triumph was “no less than we deserved”.

Bodens’ clinched the Division 2 Norra to secure promotion to Swedish football’s third tier on the final day of the season with a 2-1 victory away to Pitea at the weekend.

“It was a great experience,” Clemons said. “It was another good, hard-fought performance [against Pitea].

“It was same as we’ve been doing throughout the second half of the season.”

Remarkably, Bodens’ win on Saturday was their eighth on the trot.

“At one point we needed to win every game for a chance at play-offs and we did our bit, finishing with eight consecutive wins,” the Bermuda midfielder said. “Had some luck with other teams around us slipping up at crucial times, but it’s no less than we deserved. I think we were the best team all season; it just took us a while to put that together with results.”

Bodens finished two points ahead of Hudiksvall, with 55 points from 26 matches.

Clemons penned a two-year deal with Bodens in April after turning down an offer to play for Estonian top-flight outfit Viljandi Tulevik.

The 24-year-old made an immediate impact, helping his new club win a pre-season tournament in which he was named the most valuable player. He scored on his professional debut during Bodens’ opener away to Hudiksvall, the first of his nine goals in 31 league appearances.

“I got lucky and fitted in right away,” Clemons said. “It’s been a dream season, no real obstacles. The system is one I have been used to; the climate is OK and everyone speaks English.”

Having helped his club fulfil their mission, the former Southampton Rangers and BAA player now has his sights on Bermuda’s Concacaf Nations League qualifier against El Salvador at home on November 16.

“It’s going to be tough and we’ll need to be at our best,” said Clemons, who impressed during Bermuda’s 12-0 defeat of Sint Maarten at the National Stadium this month.

“We’re confident that we have what it takes to get a positive result and the home support is going to be key.”

Bermuda started their qualifiers with a 3-1 defeat by Aruba before bouncing back against Sint Maarten. Coach Kyle Lightbourne’s team will finish their qualifying campaign with an away tie against Dominican Republic in March.

The qualifiers will determine the three divisions for the Nations League, which will start in September 2019, as well as the ten remaining Gold Cup positions.
