Accolades just keep flowing for Clemons

Just when you thought that Willie Clemons’s debut season in Swedish football could not get any better, it did.

Less than a week after helping Bodens clinch the Division 2 Norra to secure promotion to Swedish football’s third tier, the Bermuda player was chosen as the league’s best midfielder for the 2018 campaign.

It is an honour the former Southampton Rangers and BAA player refuses to take all of the credit for.

“I am grateful beyond measure I won the award, but it’s a testament to our team as a whole,” Clemons told The Royal Gazette. “I could not have done it alone and my team-mates are happy for me.”

Clemons was also nominated for the best goal of the season, for an effort converted in a 1-1 home draw against Ostersund in June.

“I didn’t make it past the first cut but I’m happy to see my team-mate Arish Nouri is still in the running for the award,” Clemons said.

Bodens clinched the league title on the final day of the season with a 2-1 victory away to Piteam, their eighth on the trot.

“At one point we needed to win every game for a chance at play-offs and we did our bit, finishing with eight consecutive wins,” Clemons said. “Had some luck with other teams around us slipping up at crucial times, but it’s no less than we deserved.”

Bodens finished the campaign two points ahead of Hudiksvall, with 55 points from 26 matches.

Clemons penned a two-year deal with the Swedish club in April after turning down an offer to play for Estonian top-flight outfit Viljandi Tulevik.

The 24-year-old made an immediate impact, helping his new club win a preseason tournament in which he was named the most valuable player. He scored on his professional debut during Bodens’ opener away to Hudiksvall, the first of his nine goals in 31 league appearances.
