Goater joins Macclesfield coaching staff
Shaun Goater has been added to Sol Campbell’s coaching team at struggling Sky Bet League Two side Macclesfield Town.
The 48-year-old is the latest high-profile name to join Campbell’s backroom staff since the former Arsenal and England defender arrived at Moss Rose Stadium in September.
Andrew Cole, the former Manchester United and England striker, who like Goater lives in Cheshire, was appointed as the club’s forwards coach last month.
Goater, who has been trying to break into club management for several years, is to work with Macclesfield’s academy teams on a part-time basis.
The former Manchester City striker gained experience in non-League football during the second half of the 2016-17 season at Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division side Ilkeston.
He inherited a side that had lost 15 of their opening 17 matches and, despite some impressive results, was unable to repair the damage as Ilkeston were relegated.
Goater also had a short stint as assistant manager at non-League outfit New Mills, as well as brief spells as a forwards coach at Doncaster Rovers and Scottish side St Johnstone.
In addition to helping found the Bermuda Hogges, a team that played in the United States semi-professional and amateur leagues from 2007 to 2013, Goater spent four seasons at boyhood club North Village, where he won the league title, three Friendship Trophy titles and two Dudley Eve Trophy titles.
Goater turned down the national team coach’s job on a temporary basis before the appointment of Andrew Bascome.
Macclesfield, a former club of Bermuda forward Kyle Lightbourne, are second from bottom, two points from safety with 27 points from 31 matches. They are at home to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
