Lewis returns stateside to join Charleston

Zeiko Lewis

Zeiko Lewis is eager to showcase his talents again in the United States after joining United Soccer League Championship side Charleston Battery yesterday.

The Bermuda forward is the fourteenth player to be added to the club’s squad for the upcoming season.

“Thank you Charleston Battery for welcoming me to their family,” Lewis said. “I am looking forward to getting to know the lads and having a good season.

“I am always looking to leave a positive impression on my team-mates, clubs and the leagues that I play in. Can’t wait to get started.”

The 23-year-old is no stranger to the USL Championship, having previously played for the New York Red Bulls II.

“It’s a good level and there are many quality players and teams within the league,” he said. “I am happy to be back in the US. It’s always been like a second home for me and close to home as well.”

Charleston play in the Eastern Conference of the Championship, which is the top league in the three-tier USL structure.

They finished fourth in their conference last term to earn an eleventh consecutive appearance in the play-offs, where they lost 1-0 against Lewis’s former team New York Red Bulls II.

“I have played against Charleston Battery and they are a very good team,” Lewis added. “They are a strong technical side and it will be good to get out there and get started with them.

“I have not been around any of the guys before. But I’ve played against them and they seem like a good group of guys. I’m looking forward to getting to know them.”

Lewis joins Charleston from Icelandic top-flight side HK Kopavogs and spent the end of last season on loan with FH.

Prior to his move to Iceland, Lewis was selected seventeenth overall by the New Red Bulls in the 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. He helped Red Bulls II reach the USL Championship Eastern Conference final during a loan spell with the reserve side before being released by the MLS club in November of 2017.

Charleston start their pre-season on Sunday away to the College of Charleston.

They will then play against MLS sides FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire and in the Carolina Challenge Cup between February 16 and 23. Charleston finish their preseason campaign against Coastal Carolina University on February 27 and North Carolina FC on March 2.
