Leverock nets in Sligo defeat

Sligo Rovers defender Danté Leverock

Danté Leverock scored his first goal for Sligo Rovers but it was not enough to prevent them losing 2-1 in extra-time away to Finn Harps in the second round of the EA Sports Cup at Finn Park yesterday.

The Bermuda captain grabbed an 88th-minute equaliser with a volley in the box after Mark Coyle put the home side in front two minutes earlier.

The visiting side went agonisingly close to taking the lead shortly after when Harps cleared the ball off the line during a goalmouth scramble.

Finn Harps regained the lead in the ninth minute of extra time through Sam Todd and held on to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition at the expense of Leverock, who picked up a late booking, and his team-mates.

“It’s never nice to lose [and] obviously we haven’t been on the best of form,” Leverock said. “We are looking to keep working hard and improve. It’s nice to score but it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win the match.”

Leverock joined Sligo on a one-year deal from Estonian outfit Narva Trans last December.

He led Bermuda to a 3-1 win away to the Dominican Republic in a Concacaf Nations League qualifier last month to qualify for the Gold Cup for the first time. Leverock returned to Sligo’s line-up for last Friday’s SSC Airtricity League clash away to Derry City, which they lost 2-0.
