Timmy Figureido, the Robin Hood assistant coach, believes his side’s extra experience was key as they won a second straight FA Cup title and third overall in a thrilling final against X-Roads at the National Stadium yesterday.

Hood won the match 3-2 thanks to goals from Shakir Smith, Tomiko Goater and Lejaun Simmons. Donavan Thompson and Paul Simons netted for X-Roads.

“Hats off to the players for getting the job done,” said Figureido, who was standing in for head coach John Barry Nusum, who is off island.

“I thought we under-performed a little bit and didn’t manage the game as well as we should have. But that happens when you get caught up in the atmosphere of cup finals.

“In the end, we just had a little bit more experience being in a final and probably being together as long as we have.”

The former Bermuda goalkeeper also tipped his hat to his team’s rivals who put up a good fight. “X-Roads came and performed well and hats off to them,” he added.

“I thought they put in a great performance and had a helluva a game.”

Figureido said winning the prestigious showpiece final for the third time was just as special as the previous two occasions.

“Every trophy is special and there are a lot of people that have played this game for many, many years that never graced or won a final,” he added. “This is actually the first time our club has won back-to-back trophies, so we just made another step.”

Steven Simons, the Robin Hood president, added: “I’m extremely proud of winning the FA Cup, but it started Friday.

“Our under-15 side came out here and won their third trophy [the Under-15 Knockout Cup]for the season, so the whole programme is really doing well.”

Farid El Karfa, the X-Roads coach, said his players showed plenty of character and were unfortunate not to capitalise on more of their chances.

“I’m still proud of my team; no regrets,” he said. “We came here, our first experience [of a major final] and they were able to present themselves well.

“We showed character from going down 2-0. It was very hard yet we were still able to push through and scored two goals to keep the game close.

“In the second half, I thought we played very well and could have scored more goals but we were unlucky.”
