Hislop to add stardust to BFA event

My football journey: Shaka Hislop will speak at the BFA Symposium next weekend

Shaka Hislop will share his wealth of knowledge with football enthusiasts during the Bermuda Football Association end-of-season symposium and prize-giving ceremony.

The BFA announced yesterday that the former Newcastle United, West Ham United and Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper, who now works as an ESPN analyst, will be the special guest at both events.

Hislop was a member of the Newcastle side that finished runners-up in the Premier League in 1995-96 and 1996-97

The 50-year-old also earned an FA Cup runners-up medal during a second stint at West Ham.

“Fans will remember [Hislop] from playing for Trinidad as well as Newcastle and more recently his exploits on ESPN, so we are very excited to have Shaka as a special guest,” Mark Wade, the BFA president, said.

“At the symposium we’ll have a panel discussion with our national team coaches and some players where we will be able to give the fans a little peak behind the scenes of our qualification to the Gold Cup and allow the fans to also ask questions of players and coaches.

“Our second panel discussion is going to be entitled ‘My Football Journey’ and we’ll have Shaka Hislop sit on that panel, as well as players and coaches, so it promises to be an exciting day.”

The symposium will be held at CedarBridge Academy on April 27, starting from 9.30am. Meanwhile, the prize-giving ceremony will take place the same day at City Hall beginning at 7.30pm. The theme of the event is “Heroes”.

As well as recognising the top performers in the Premier Division and First Division from the past season, the five legends that will champion the 2019 BFA Legends Scholarship awards programme will be announced at the event.

Order of Merit Awards will be presented to individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the BFA and the sport in general both at club and national levels.
