Stevie Dickinson will be among those being honoured for their contributions to local football during the RO Smith Annual Over 40s Veteran All-Stars Football Classic at Somerset Cricket Club today.

The former St George’s, Devonshire Colts and Bermuda forward was regarded as one of the island’s top players in his day and is perhaps best remembered for his scoring exploits with his explosive left foot.

Dickinson’s journey playing at youth level for Wellington Rovers before he joined St George’s Colts.

He left St George’s at age 18 to join Devonshire Colts and also he represented Bermuda at youth level at the Concacaf Championships in Honduras in 1978.

He won the Dudley Eve Trophy with Colts and appeared in numerous other finals with the club and also represented Bermuda at senior level playing under coaches Carlton “Pepe” Dill, Roddy Burchall and Larry Smith.

After spending several years at Colts, Dickinson rejoined childhood club St George’s, helping them win the First Division Shield and clinch promotion to the top flight.

He left St George’s again to play for Vasco da Gama and Hotels International before rejoining the East Enders where he ended his career.

Meanwhile, also among this year’s honourees is Dickinson’s former Colts team-mate Albert Dowling, who is regarded as one of the top strikers of his era.

Carlton “Calley” Best, Ivan “Joe” Cann, Millard Bassett, Willard Bassett, Delbert Minors, Alfred Furbert, Gary “Judge” Tucker and Randy Richardson are the remaining honourees.

Best, brother of Bermuda legend Clyde Best, is a former Ireland Rangers and Somerset Trojans centre half, while Cann played as a winger for Somerset Colts along with the Bassett twins.

Defenders Minors, Furbert and Richardson and winger Tucker all played for St George’s.

This year’s marks the 25th anniversary of the RO Smith Annual Over 40s Veteran All-Stars Football Classic, featuring perennial rivals Somerset and St George’s.

Rodney Marsh, the former Manchester City and England striker, will be the guest of honour.

Marsh scored 36 goals in 118 appearances for City and earned nine caps for England in the 1970s.

He also had stints at Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, where he earned a League Cup winner’s medal and netted 106 goals in 211 appearances, before joining City for a then club record fee of £200,000.

Marsh, 74, also played in the United States for the indoor side Tampa Bay Rowdies, who he also coached in the 1980s, playing alongside Bermuda legend Clyde Best.

The All-Stars match starts at 3pm and will be preceded by a youth match between Somerset and St George’s, which gets under way at 12.30pm.
