Somerset came from behind to beat St George’s 4-2 in the 25th annual RO Smith Over 40s Veteran All-Stars Classic at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday.

St George’s took an early two-goal lead thanks to goals from Stevie Dickinson and Derek Wright. However, the home side rallied and hit back through goals from Dwight Basden, Darin Minors and Marcel Dill going into the interval.

Somerset struck again in the 70th minute through Reggie Tucker.

“The first 20 minutes didn’t go too well for us,” Larry Hunt, the Over-40s Veteran All-Stars chairman, said.

“I wasn’t on the sideline at that point, but I had to go down and make some noise. Just before the half we scored a third.

“It was 3-2 for a while and then we scored again about 20 minutes from the end. It was a good game and everybody enjoyed themselves.”

St George’s scorer Dickinson was one of ten former players to be honoured at the event for their contribution to the local game. The others were Dickinson’s former Devonshire Colts team-mate Albert Dowling, Carlton “Calley” Best, Ivan “Joe” Cann, Millard Bassett, Willard Bassett, Delbert Minors, Alfred Furbert, Gary “Judge” Tucker and Randy Richardson.

Best, the brother of Bermuda legend Clyde Best, is a former Ireland Rangers and Somerset Trojans defender, while Cann played as a winger for Somerset Colts along with the Bassett twins.

Defenders Minors, Furbert and Richardson and winger Tucker all played for St George’s.

The event also reunited Bermuda legend Clyde Best with former Tampa Bay Rowdies team-mate Rodney Marsh, who was the guest of honour.

Marsh, 74, also had spells at Manchester City, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers and earned nine caps for England in the 1970s.

“Rodney Marsh is a character,” Hunt added.

“He was a lot of fun and made a nice speech to the players after the game.

“The weather was beautiful and overall it was just a wonderful day.”
