Mexico have named six overseas-based players in their 25-man squad for their Concacaf Nations League opener against Bermuda at the National Stadium on Friday night.

Among the stars in coach Gerardo Martino’s travelling party are Napoli winger Hirving Lozano, Atlético Madrid midfielder Héctor Herrera and Porto forward Jesús Corona.

All three players missed Mexico’s victorious Gold Cup campaign last summer: Lozano — who signed for Napoli for $46.5 million from Dutch side PSV in August — through injury, Herrera because of personal reasons while Corona was involved in a dispute with Martino.

Also returning to the fold is Real Betis midfielder Diego Lainez, who was left out of the Gold Cup squad after playing in the Under-20 World Cup in Poland in May and June.

Martino’s squad has been fleshed out by players who took part in the Gold Cup, including Celta Vigo defender Néstor Araujo, LA Galaxy forward Uriel Antuna and Monterrey midfielders Rodolfo Pizarro and Carlos Rodríguez.

The most notable absentee from the squad, which arrives in Bermuda tomorrow after a training camp in New Jersey, is Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Raul Jiménez, who has been rested. Jiménez finished as top scorer at the Gold Cup with five goals.

Mexico have experienced mixed fortunes in their two friendlies since the Gold Cup, losing 4-0 away to Argentina last month before defeating Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 at home last week. They return home to face Panama on Tuesday in their second group B game in the top tier of the Nations League.

Last month, Bermuda pulled off a huge upset by beating Panama 2-0 away just days after losing 4-1 at home in their opening game of the competition.
