Happy return to roots for Thompson

On target: North Village’s Jonathan Briers

Somerset Eagles 1 North Village 4North Village coach Kenny Thompson left his childhood field in buoyant mood after his side beat Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field yesterday. Despite the match being played in a steady downpour, it was Village who took control early and put the game beyond reach of the home team with a 3-0 lead at the half. The win moves Village into top spot over Robin Hood, whose game against Devonshire Cougars was postponed because four of their players are involved in Bermuda’s Concacaf Nations League match against Mexico tomorrow.“We had to be patient to score the first goal and take control of the game,” Thompson said. “We handled ourselves very well and dominated most of the game.”Both teams took a while to adjust to the slippery conditions. Village midfielder Troy Tucker tried to test the Eagles goalkeeper Lorenzo Lambert early with a 35-yard effort, but his effort sailed inches over.Pierre Smith should have put Village ahead in the thirteenth minute when his shot came off the upright and bounced back into play before his attempted rebound was cleared by a recovering defender. The Eagles’ first scoring opportunity came midway through the half when forward Rayquan Woodley-Smith cut in on the right to get inside the box but tried to flick his shot with his right foot when swinging his left boot was perhaps a better option. The opening goal came in the 33rd minute when a cross was knocked back into the centre to find Jonathan Briers unmarked. His delicate chip through a crowded goalmouth landed in the far left corner. The Eagles’ Teniko Eve slipped the ball to Rego, but his shot was blocked by the body of the advancing Bell. Smith finally got in on the scoring when his drive pulled off a spectacular save from Lambert for a corner. The resulting corner was headed back into the centre for Smith to get a toe poke past the diving goalkeeper. Just as the Eagles were preparing to go into the break two goals down, luck was against them as Tucker scored the third. He started and finished a move with a curling pass with the outside of the boot to winger Justin Bell before continuing his run to the top of the box and hitting the cross into the net.Substitute Tahj Wade should have opened the scoring for the Eagles seconds before the half, but his shot was blocked by Bell.Village’s fourth goal came courtesy of a poor goal kick, with the loose ball being played to substitute Jason Lee, who was able to place the ball into the net.The Eagles’ persistence was not in vain as they scored a consolation goal four minutes from time when Wade put Rego through with a weighted pass. He did well to keep his composure and place his shot past Bell.SCORERSSomerset Eagles: Rego 88North Village: Briers 33, Smith 41, Tucker 43, Lee 84TEAMSSomerset Eagles (4-2-3-1): L Lambert — S Lambert, L Burch, G Smith, A Morrissey (sub: T Wade, 41min) — D Simmons (sub: R Ford, 86), T Eve, A Telford, R Woodley-Smith (sub: J DeSilva, 55), M Iris-Simmons, N Rego.
