Devonshire Cougars 2 Somerset Eagles 1

Drewonde Bascome came off the bench and snatched a late winner from the penalty spot as hosts Devonshire Cougars came out on top of an evenly fought Premier Division clash against Somerset Eagles at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.

It seemed as though both teams were destined for a share of the spoils with just four minutes remaining after Cougars striker Erin Butterfield-Tankard and Eagles captain Anwar Telford traded goals either side of the half.

However, the game took another twist when Eagles central defender Lorenzo Burch floored Cougars playmaker Zari Simmons in the box from a set-piece, leaving referee Anthony Francis no choice but to award a penalty.

Forward Bascome, who came on as 76th minute substitute for the injured Darren Williams, made no mistake as he rifled the ball into the far right corner well beyond the grasp of Eagles goalkeeper Lorenzo Lambert.

“First half I thought we were way below par,” Mark Smith, the Cougars assistant coach, said. “But second half the boys pulled it together and got the job done.”

Gary Darrell, the Eagles assistant coach, felt his team were the orchestrators of their own demise.

“It comes down to a bad decision,” he lamented. “We deserved more but you can only get what you work for and we just have to make better decisions.”

Eagles started on the front foot and wreaked havoc on Cougars with the long ball in the attacking third and created the first real chance with striker Nathan Rego getting on the end of a diagonal cross from deep which Cougars goalkeeper Ajai Daniels saved with his feet.

In contrast, Cougars were slow getting out of the blocks as they struggled to keep possession and lacked creativity and cutting edge.

But they gradually began to show signs of life with midfielder Saki Pearman curling Butterfield-Tankard’s pass from an angle in the box just past the far post.

Eagles were not so fortunate when Butterfield-Tankard pounced just moments before the break to put his team ahead in spectacular fashion. The striker exchanged passes with Pearman inside of the box before lashing the ball into Lambert’s top right corner.

The home side, who introduced another striker at the start of the second-half, picked up where they left off, dominatingpossession and piled on the pressure in the hopes of killing the game off.

Cougars Elisha Darrell squandered a golden opportunity in the box while Butterfield-Tankard brought off a fingertip save by Lambert with an effort from point blank range.

Those missed opportunities came back to haunt as Eagles drew level against the run of play around the hour mark from the penalty spot.

Cougars goalkeeper Daniels was judged to have brought Eagles Chare Smith down challenging for the ball and Telford buried the ensuing penalty kick with aplomb.

The game opened up heading down the final stretch as both teams went all out for the win.

Cougars Darrell had a shot at the near post saved by Lambert while at the other end Eagles Teniko Eve volleyed just wide. Daniels also did well to smother Telford’s low drive at the near post. Eagles then virtually threw the game away when they conceded a soft free-kick in their own half and then conceded the game-deciding penalty.
