Eagles triumph in seven-goal thriller

Losing cause: Dandy Town captain Angelo Simmons

Somerset Eagles 4 Dandy Town 3Youngsters Nathan Rego, Rayquan Woodley-Smith and Chare Smith played major roles in helping Somerset Eagles to overcome an experienced Dandy Town in a seven-goal thriller at White Hill Field yesterday. “It was a hard-fought match,” Jensen Rogers, the Somerset Eagles coach, said. “At half-time we talked about limiting our mistakes and fighting hard for every ball. We did that and won.” Eagles got off to a flying start as Rego had the ball into the net as early as the third minute when he picked up a loose ball just outside the box before dribbling a few steps and slotting the ball past a Town goalkeeper Treadwell Gibbons. Town’s character would be tested and they responded soon after when Lynn Emery chipped perfectly for captain Angelo Simmons to flick into the path of Oneko Lowe whose glancing header beat Eagles goalkeeper Lorenzo Lambert for height and landed into the back of the net. Town scored first after the break when midfielder Kwame Steede played Lowe through only to be brought down inside the box by goalkeeper Lambert conceding a penalty and also getting booked. Captain Simmons scored easily sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.Eagles equalised minutes later courtesy of youngster Woodley-Smith. Cutting in from the left, Woodley-Smith unleashed a firm shot which goalkeeper Gibbons seemed to have misjudged as he moved to his left only to stick out his right hand at the last minute but could not prevent the ball from entering the net. Woodley-Smith, who was a menace to the Town defence all afternoon, was the creator of the third Eagles’ goal when he was brought down just outside the box. Substitute Smith was on the end of the free kick, placing his header low and into the right hand corner despite a diving effort from Gibbons. Simmons equalised with his second on the stroke of 90 minutes when we was put through to slip the ball past the advancing Eagles’ goalkeeper. Town thought they had scored the winner when Steede slipped a pass inside to Lowe whose first time effort looked to be heading for the back of the net only for goalkeeper Lambert to stick out his boot and turn the ball around the post.Smith then made a threatening run into the box only to be needlessly bundled over by Gibbons. Eagles captain Anwar Telford struck a firm spot kick which beat the goalkeeper for pace as he got a hand to it but could not prevent it from entering the net for the winner.SCORERSSomerset Eagles: Rego 3, Woodley-Smith 57, Smith 71, Telford 90+5Dandy Town: Lowe 13, Simmons 57 penTEAMSSomerset Eagles (4-1-3-2): Lorenzo Lambert — L Burch, M Iris-Simmons, K Evans, Shentoine Lambert (sub: Antrell Butterfield, 86min) — T Eve – R Woodley-Smth, A Telford, E Fubler (sub: M Thomas 74) — D Simmons (sub: Chare Smith, 57), N Rego.
