Lambe and Smith ready to lock horns

Cambridge United player Reggie Lambe

Bermuda team-mates Jonté Smith and Reggie Lambe are on a collision course in Sky Bet League Two.Smith’s Cheltenham Town will host Lambe and his Cambridge United team-mates at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium tomorrow.“I’m looking forward to it, it’s a special occasion when two Bermudians are able to compete overseas in a professional environment no matter the sport.” said Smith, who finally opened his league goalscoring account in his team’s 3-0 win away to Mansfield Town last weekend.“I remember watching Kamau [Leverock] and Delray [Rawlins] play against each other at Sussex’s cricket ground and I felt a strong sense of country pride watching those two compete like that.”“Bragging rights are definitely up for grabs. I really can’t wait for this one.”Lambe, who set up the only goal of the game in Cambridge’s 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in their previous outing, added: “It’s an important game for both, more so for us as we’re looking to climb the table, so it’ll be a good test.“Jonté has been doing well and hope he gets some minutes. But once we cross the line it’s all about the three points.”Cheltenham are fourth in the table with 34 points from 19 games and have a game in hand on Forest Green Rovers, who are third on 35 points in the final automatic promotion spot.Cambridge are in eleventh, four points adrift of Northampton Town in seventh and the final play-off place.“If we can get a good result against Cheltenham going into what is a busy Christmas period that would be the ideal scenario for us,” Lambe said. “It would put us back within touching distance for the play-off places and hopefully give us a boost we need to go and get points from our next games as well.”The match could turn out to be a throwback to the time when Bermuda team-mates Kyle Lightbourne and Shaun Goater faced off against each other in the English game.“My time when playing against Kyle were some really good experiences and I remember one time we played each other in particular,” Goater recalled. “It was Christmas time and his family were planning to come over to my house. Nita [Goater’s wife Anita] had cooked turkey and everything. So, Kyle beat me up at Rotherham, took three points off me and then came over my house and ate my turkey and ham!”Lightbourne added: “It was always a special moment and the first time it happened it felt kind of strange because we know one another and were speaking to one another on the phone quite often.“It was one moment when Shaun was playing for Rotherham and I was playing for Walsall and they wanted to really rough him up because he was their danger man. “One of my midfielders who was a hard-tackling guy was just picking fights on him all game and it was a strange feeling because him [Goater] and I were mates. I was like, ‘Don’t pick on him, pick on somebody else’. “We won the game in the end but that was part of our tactics that day. Back then you were able to do it and people used to do it against myself.”
