Zuill ‘humbled’ by tournament

Role model: Alicia Zuill

Alicia Zuill says she is humbled to have a tournament played in honour of the role she has played in the introduction of women’s football in Bermuda. The Bermuda Football Association’s women’s committee is set to host the inaugural Alicia Zuill Women’s Football Tournament this month.“First of all, I would like to thank the BFA Women’s’ Committee and the BFA for scheduling this Women’s Football Tournament in honour of me,” said Zuill, the mother of former Devonshire Colts and Bermuda striker Aljamé Zuill. “Anyone who really knows me knows that when I do anything in our community, it is from my heart and not for accolades.“I would like to thank my family for their support and name a few gentlemen and ladies who were behind me in implementing the women’s football league.“First and foremost, my father, the late Warrington ‘Soup’ Zuill, Uncle Gary Darrell, Donald Dane, Leslie Cherry and former Whitney Institute female students Keona Belboda, Tanya Usher, Christy Johnson, Kelly Bascome, Sonia Looby, Nikita Dill-Robinson, Gina Hypolite, Kim Simons and Carla Parfit — the original Rude Girls. They were the first team started and coaches Dennis Brown, Josef Gooden, Paulos Wolffe and Herbie Bascome.”Zuill is delighted that women’s football is “flourishing” both locally and internationally.“Women’s football has been in existence for over 30 years now and I am very glad to see women’s football in Bermuda and worldwide flourishing like our males,” she added. “We must continue to encourage our females in engaging in positive activities, and be willing to explore all the opportunities that Women’s football has to offer. “It gives me great pleasure and excitement to know that some of our female players have been offered football scholarships to colleges overseas and doing great things.”The tournament will take place at BFA Field on December 28 and will feature players 16 and over.“The women’s committee of the BFA have decided that this year we would put on a series of tournaments for women in honour of the legends that paved the way for the women’s game in Bermuda,” Charysse Bean, the BFA women’s committee chairman, said.
