Smith linked with transfer window move

Wanted man: Jonté Smith

Bolton Wanderers are believed to be among a number of clubs weighing up a move for Cheltenham Town forward Jonté Smith during the transfer window this month.According to sources, Sky Bet League One side Bolton have shown an interest in signing the Bermudian when the transfer window opens on January 1.Cheltenham are also understood to be keen on extending Smith’s stay at Jonny-Rocks Stadium beyond his short-term deal, which expires on January 2.It is also believed that Scottish Premiership side Motherwell are monitoring Smith’s situation.Stephen Robinson, the Motherwell manager, is seeking a new striker to replace the departing Devante Cole, the son of former Manchester United forward Andy Cole, who joined the club on a six-month loan deal from Championship side Wigan Athletic until January 1.Smith joined Cheltenham in September from League One side Oxford United, making his debut in Cheltenham’s 4-2 league victory over Stevenage and scoring his first league goal in a 3-0 league win against Mansfield Town.He has scored four goals in four starts, including a hat-trick in his first start against West Ham United Under-21 in the Leasing.com trophy. The 25-year-old was also chosen as the club’s Autovillage Player of the Month for October after a string of outstanding performances. He was chosen by his club’s fans across social media for the award, beating out the likes of Ben Tozer, the club captain, Luke Varney and Ryan Broom, who were also among the shortlist of top performers.Smith caught the eye of Oxford’s coaches when he scored a hat-trick against them in a friendly while on trial at League Two Swindon Town and then scored twice for Oxford during a friendly against Championship side Reading before signing a short-term deal.Smith, who made his football league debut with Crawley Town in 2010, has been with Cheltenham since pre-season.He missed his club’s 1-0 home league defeat against Plymouth Argyle on Boxing Day through a throat infection, but will likely return to training this weekend.
