The inaugural Alicia Zuill Women’s Football Tournament lived up to expectations at BFA Field on Saturday, with those in attendance treated to entertaining football played in the spirit of the game.Eight teams, featuring present and former players, participated in the seven-a-side competition, which was won by Flo Legends, who finished undefeated.Led by Nia Christopher’s hat-trick and another from Katherine Bean-Rosario, Flo Legends won 4-0 against Sylvia All-Stars in the final.“It feels great to have won the tournament and I’m happy for the opportunity we got to play,” Zemira Webb, the Flo Legends captain, said. “It was a very special moment as we had never played as a team before.”Christopher, the daughter of referee and former Dandy Town defender Lloyd Christopher, said: “It took a while for us to get used to each other and figure out how each other played. We all figured it out and were able to work with it.”Christopher finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals. “To get a hat-trick in the final made it even more special,” she said. “The first goal I didn’t think I was going to get to it. I was hoping and just swung. The other two just came from teamwork.”Bean-Rosario was chosen as the tournament’s most valuable player. Auntie’s Super Stars finished third after beating Alicia’s Girls 3-2 on penalties in the consolation final.The tournament was played in honour of Alicia Zuill, the mother of former Bermuda striker Aljame Zuill, for the role she has played in local women’s football.“It was a great turnout and I saw some very exciting football,” she said. “The teams that played in the final both were my mother’s name, Flora Bell Sylvia, so I’m sure she’s smiling.“I’m very happy to know that a lot of our former players and college students had the opportunity to showcase themselves. It will be a yearly tournament and is something the players can look forward to.”Charysse Bean, the Bermuda Football Association’s women’s committee chairman, hopes the tournament is the beginning of bigger things for the women’s game.“It was a successful day and we saw something we can build upon,” she said. “We are going to work with the women to see how we can have this more often and eventually get to a league.”
