Flanagan’s Onions will be looking to secure their first piece of silverware when they face Devonshire Colts in the Shield Trophy final at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow.Treshun Smith, the club’s vice-captain, is optimistic about their chances against Colts.“This would mean a lot, it would be the first piece of silverware for our team. It is our first final since the FA Cup loss to Dandy Town [in 2015],” Smith said.As for the threat Colts pose, Smith added: “They have a lot of pacy, quick guys, so we just have to be strategic in our approach. They had a couple of youngsters in the national squad such as [midfielder] Diego Richardson.”Callon Burns, the Onions captain, believes they possess greater experience than Colts and that could prove the difference on the day.“We have a decent mix, I know Devonshire Colts have primarily youth, but we also have some new signings,” he said. “It’s not easy for them to quickly gel into the team. We know what Colts are going to do; it’s all about how we perform, and we must be totally focused to win the trophy.”Burns, 32, also thinks his side will benefit from being the “clear underdogs”.He said: “It’s a big benefit to be underdog. It relieves some pressure from us. Colts are flying high this season and they will be clear favourites, so the shackles will be off when we walk on to that pitch.”Onions, who defeated Vasco 3-1 in the semi-finals last weekend, have won four of their last five games. However, Colts thrashed Flanagan’s 4-0 at Goose Gosling Field in the First Division in October.Colts beat St David’s 2-0 in the second semi-final on Boxing Day. The Shield final kicks off at 12 noon.
