Clemons feeling excited to make step up in Sweden

On the move: Willie Clemons

Willie Clemons is champing at the bit to impress at his new Swedish club Dalkurd during the upcoming season. The Bermuda midfielder has agreed a two-year deal with the club who are based in the city of Uppsala and play in the Allsvenskan, the second tier in the Swedish football pyramid.“It’s a very big step and it feels very good to be here,” said Clemons, who has joined the club from fellow Swedish side Bodens. “The team contains a good collection of players and I am very happy to be part of this group. It’s always going to take some time to adjust to new surroundings, team-mates and styles. But it shouldn’t be too big of a change.”The 25-year-old has opted for a new challenge after his two-year deal with Bodens expired at the end of last season.“My contract at Boden has run its course and I chose not to resign,” added Clemons, who netted six goals last season. “When I was first contacted by Dalkurd I was surprised. They originally saw me play for Bodens some time last year before the Gold Cup and reached out to me. I appreciate the trust that the club and coach [Paul Olausson] have shown me and I feel honoured to be a part of Dalkurd.“I’m excited to get started with the season and the plan is crystal clear; Dalkurd is a club that belongs to Allsvenskan and that is what we want to achieve. It is a clear way of thinking that the coach emphasised to me from the beginning.”The former Southampton Rangers player left Bermuda in January 2018 to participate in the Professional Soccer Consulting Baltic Showcase Tour in Latvia and Estonia in the hope of landing a professional deal.He was initially offered a deal to by Estonian top-flight outfit Viljandi Tulevik, but turned them down and instead signed his first professional contract with Bodens, who were relegated to Sweden’s fourth tier last season.Clemons was a member of Bermuda’s squad that made their debut at Concacaf Gold Cup and competed in League A of the Nations League last year.
