Jones and Richardson earn Colts win
Devonshire Colts 3 Flanagan’s Onions 0
An opening goal by Richard Jones followed by a goal in each half by Bermuda forward Diego Richardson helped Devonshire Colts to a comfortable win over Flanagan’s Onions in this FA Cup fixture played at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.
“I am happy to be part of this team,” an elated Richardson said afterwards. “It feels good to score, but more importantly that we are in the next round.”
Colts established their dominance from the opening minutes and it was Richardson who tested Flanagan’s goalkeeper Koshun Simmons with a firm drive that Simmons did well to cradle into his chest.
The goalkeeper couldn’t do anything to prevent the opening goal, though, as Bryan Rose played a diagonal ball over the top for Jones to outrun the defence and slip the ball low into the net.
Onions’ first threat on goal came in the 40th minute when they won a free kick just outside the area, but Zion Simmons drove his shot well over.
Colts doubled their lead a minute before the half when Jibri Salaam set up Richardson with a perfectly floated pass, which he ran on to to slot the ball past the planted Simmons.
Flanagan’s had a chance to get back into the match before the half, but Daniel Lehner’s good dribble into the box ended with a lofted shot that did not bother Jaden Mills-Furbert in the Colts goal.
Colts continued their dominance into the second half, with the Onions’ players merely chasing the numbers on their backs. A third goal was imminent, and it came from an individual effort from Richardson.
The forward applied pressure to dispossess an Onions defender and then drilled a hard shot that bounced over the diving Simmons into goal.
Mills-Furbert nearly gifted Onions a consolation goal as time was running out when he was dispossessed under pressure from two players, but Seth Odondi’s shot was blocked by a recovering defender and cleared to safety.
