Barnes postpones island visit

Former Liverpool player John Barnes

John Barnes’s visit to Bermuda this week has been postponed because of “personal matters”, organisers have confirmed. The former Liverpool winger was scheduled to arrive on island tomorrow to mentor students at Berkeley Institute, CedarBridge Academy and Victor Scott Primary School and also take part in various other social gatherings this weekend.“I am indeed sorry for the short notice,” Barnes stated. “However, the circumstances do not permit me to be away from my home at this time.”Barnes, who netted 84 goals in 314 appearances for Liverpool between 1987 and 1997, had teamed up with Bermuda legends Shaun Goater and Clyde Best in an initiative designed to influence positive social change among the island’s youngsters. The initiative is part of a programme known as the Sports Mentoring Initiative being organised by the Official Liverpool Supporters Club Bermuda.“I’m sorry it couldn’t happen this weekend,” Goater said. “But I will be there with the legend when we arrive at a new date.”Organisers said a new date will be announced shortly. Any persons holding tickets have been asked to await the announcement of a new date or contact OLSCB at secretary@lfcbermuda.com for further information regarding tickets.
