Nahki Wells believes he is poised to embark on another one of his characteristic scoring sprees as he looks to propel Bristol City into the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.Wells has scored twice since joining City for £4 million from Premier League side Burnley in January, netting against Fulham in their final game before Covid-19 brought football to a halt.He had hoped to pick up where he left off in City’s first match after the unprecedented break, against Blackburn Rovers last weekend, but suffered a calf strain in training and was limited to a substitute’s appearance in a 3-1 defeat. It leaves City tenth in the table, two points adrift of the play-off places.Wells told The Royal Gazette: “It was a tough result, a hard one to swallow. It just wasn’t good enough from every individual, especially considering what we have in front of us. “It was difficult for me going into the match. I had a setback because of a minor tear in my calf, which had me off the grass for 12 days. I had one day with the physio and a day and a half with the team; I was very underprepared.“I didn’t expect to play a big part [against Blackburn], but I was happy to play 45 minutes and get some match fitness.”As a forward who feeds on confidence, Wells admits the sooner he can add to his season tally of 17 goals the better — he scored 15 times while on loan at Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers.“I’m definitely a player who goes through goalscoring [patches],” Wells said. “I want to get back on the scoresheet as quickly as possible. I do feel I can quickly find my groove. “I’m feeling sharp and strong and I just need fitness, which I will get over the next few days in preparation for Sheffield Wednesday [at home on Sunday].“When I’m scoring goals and flourishing, that’s when you see the best Nahki Wells. I’d have liked a better return than what I’ve had at Bristol City, but I’ve got another eight games, plus three more hopefully [in the play-offs and final] to improve on that.”The return from injury of Benik Afobe, who is on loan from Stoke City, has increased competition for places on a stellar front line, including Wells and Famara Diedhiou.Wells has proven best when paired with a target man such as Diedhiou rather than an off-the-shoulder striker such as Afobe. However, the Bermudian believes all three have important roles to play during the run-in.He said: “Between the three of us, we have every aspect of a striker that you need. “It’s about working together to score as many goals as we collectively can to try and fire this club into the Premier League.“It’s always good to have competition and I think we’re all generally good people and are happy to see one another do well.“I haven’t been able to really strike up a really good partnership with Famara yet, but I still believe it’s possible.” Despite picking up only two points in their previous six matches, Wells remains confident City can force their way into the play-offs, although he emphasises they cannot afford to slip up against Wednesday.The 30-year-old added: “It’s important to get ourselves going and I think we have the squad, the depth and calibre of players to get us in the play-offs.“It’s very important to get those three points as quickly as possible, which will give us a lot more confidence. We definitely have a lot to play for and we’re excited about the challenge ahead.”
