Double recognition for Wells

Nahki Wells bagged a brace of a different sort after being named in the Sky Bet Championship Team of the Week and voted as Quest TV Championship Player of the Weekend. The Bristol City forward earned the plaudits for his double salvo in his team’s 3-1 victory away to Middlesbrough last weekend.“It’s always good to get honours and awards for performances and stuff like that,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.“I’m grateful and happy with my performance and happy with the awards and honours. It just puts a little bit of icing on the cake for all the hard work you put in when you do really well.“I have had a few awards along the way this season, so it’s just another good one to add to it on the back of a good performance and good win for us.”Wells’s team-mates Jamie Paterson and Andreas Weimann, who created all three of City’s goals against Middlesbrough, were also named in the Championship Team of the Week.Wells opened the scoring early at the Riverside with a spectacular left-footed curling effort.Paterson then doubled City’s lead with a shot from a tight angle before Wells slotted in his 20th goal of the season.Britt Assombalonga netted a late consolation for the home side.Wells hit the 20-goal barrier for the first time since the 2012-13 season to breathe fresh life into City’s play-off hopes. The Bermuda forward has scored five times since joining City, having netted 15 goals on loan at Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers before making his £5 million move from Premier League Burnley in January. The last time Wells reached 20 goals in a season was during Bradford City’s League Two promotion campaign seven years ago.“Personally for me, obviously grateful to be able to do that,” Wells added. “But the most important thing was the three points and getting on the scoresheet to help us continue to try and push for that sixth place and sneak back into the play-offs after a poor restart.“A lot of positives and great two back-to-back games from us. It’s always great to get a goal or two, which gives me a platform to try and score a couple more before the season ends and to try and propel us into the play-offs.”City, who are in eleventh position in the table and within three points of sixth-place Cardiff City with three games remaining, will host relegation-threatened Stoke City today.
