Free agent: Jonté Smith could be heading to Woking

Jonté Smith looks set to sign for Vanarama National League side Woking after leaving Sky Bet League Two side Cheltenham Town at the end of last season, according to reports the English media.It is understood Smith was close to joining Macclesfield before the club’s relegation from League Two was confirmed after a points deduction this month because of misconduct relating to the payment of player wages.Harrogate Town, the Football League newcomers, and National League South side Ebbsfleet United are also believed to be interested in Smith.Woking are managed by Alan Dowson and finished tenth in the National League last season.Smith, 26, scored four goals in six starts and 12 substitute appearances for Cheltenham after joining at the start of September last year, including a hat-trick against West Ham United Under-21s in the EFL Trophy. His first Football League goal came in a 3-0 win away to Mansfield Town in December, shortly after which he missed a lengthy period because of illness. The Bermuda forward started the play-off semi-final second leg against Northampton Town in June but picked up an injury early on and was withdrawn at the interval.Smith previously played for Oxford United, Crawley Town, Lewes, Gloucester City and the Metropolitan Police.
