The last of the AC World Series events is to be hosted in Fukuoka, Japan less than a month from now and we’ve discovered some interesting cultural titbits about Japan.

1 Did you know that you DO NOT tip in Japan and gratuities are not added to the bill — they simply do not accept tips. Why not? A Japanese person will tell you, “We have pride in our service. To serve you is my hospitality, my way of saying welcome”.

2 Taxi drivers in Japan get anxious if you touch the car door. That’s right, the passenger doors are automatic so whatever you do never touch the taxi door, simply wait for it to open. Ignoring this advice may result in a very upset driver!

3 Locals in Japan don’t use their mobile phones in public places, especially on buses and trains. It’s seen as an embarrassment to speak when others can hear you. Now that is one peaceful bus ride.

4 Blowing your nose in public is considered very rude, in fact it’s considered better etiquette to continue sniffing loudly and snorting even, until you can sneak away for a private moment with a handkerchief.

5 If someone does a good job or you want to say all’s well, use both thumbs up. One thumb up, for some reason means “boyfriend”!
