Marshall makes first impression

Strong run: Marshall finished ahead of Hall and Miranda

Lamont Marshall, turning out for the first time in the series, won the men’s open race in the National Cross Country Championships at the Botanical Gardens at the weekend.

Ashley Irby and Selah Tuzo were the girls’ under-17 and under-14 winners.

Marshall clocked a time of 31min 13sec over the five-mile course to finish ahead of Chefton Hall in 32:02 and Jose Miranda in 34:36.

Gayle Lindsay was the lone competitor in the women’s open category, finishing in 27:31 over the four-mile course.

Irby held off her competitors to win by more than a minute in the three-mile under-17 race, finishing in 19:25 while Jessie Marshall was second in 21:11.

Mikaela Outerbridge was third in 22:09 and Brianna Mawer fourth in 23:31. Irby had four wins in the series.

Selah Tuzo, who was also the points winner in her age group, won in 13:26, while Jade Johnston held off Jezhari Talbot in a sprint for second place, finishing in 13:40. Talbot was one second behind, while Koa Goodchild was fourth in 14:27.

In the women’s senior masters, Victoria Fiddick comfortably took first place in 20:29. In the girls under-20 three mile race, Brianna Mendes won in 19.58 while J’Auna James was second in 25:17.

In the girls’ under-12, Jasmin Hasselkuss placed first in 13:34 for the two-mile race while Ramiah Brangman was second in 14.01. Carina Bortoli won the girls’ under-10 race over the same distance in 15:42.

Jay Donawa won the men’s masters division in 21:46 with Chris Harris second in 23:47, while Scott Neil finished first among the senior masters, clocking 21:16 to finish almost a minute ahead of Sean Kelly in 22:03. Mike Whalley took the 60 and over title in 28:42.

In the junior boys, Tommy Marshall won the under-14s in 11:26 with Nirobi Mills second in 11:40, while Johndell Cumberback took the under-17 title after finishing in 16:57, nine seconds ahead of Iziah Tucker.

Jake Brislane won the under-13 boys in 12:05 with Jayson Simons second in 12:45. Elijah Bean was first in the under-10s in 13:06 over two miles, just four second ahead of Jace Donawa.
