Perez called up to US Under-23 team

Oarsome opportunity: Perez competes in Bulgaria this month

Daniel Perez has been named in the United States rowing squad for this month’s World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The Bermudian will compete in the men’s double sculls event at the annual weeklong regatta, which will feature the best young rowers in the world.

Perez, a former Saltus Grammar School pupil, has raced both the racing eights and double sculls at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Perez’s passion for rowing continued at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, where he is a member of the lightweight rowing team.

He was two-seat in the varsity coxed four that took bronze at this year’s Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship.

Perez was recently awarded the Timothy Ryerson Award given in memory of an outstanding Dartmouth oarsman to the individual who has made the most significant contribution to freshman lightweight crew.

Perez is not the first Bermudian to represent the US.

Shelley Pearson, who competed for Bermuda at the Olympic Games in Rio last summer, won a gold medal at for the US at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Brive-la Gaillarde, France, 2009.
