Hayward battles against world No 1

Bermuda boccia players Omar Hayward, left, Yushae DeSilva-Andrade, centre, and Steve Wilson are competing at the World Championships in Liverpool

All three of Bermuda’s athletes were in action at the World Boccia Championships in Liverpool, yesterday.

Omar Hayward lost 8-5 to South Korean Sung Joon Jung, before being beaten by David Smith, the British world No 1, 4-0.

“Omar played a fantastic match against Smith and kept the pressure on him,” Bermuda coach Troy Farnsworth said. “He demonstrated he can be very competitive against the very best in the world. Unfortunately, Omar narrowly missed out on the round of 16.”

Yushae DeSilva-Andrade lost 6-2 to Abilio Valente, of Portugal, the world No 8.

Steve Wilson lost 10-0 to Niko Vasil, of Greece.
